After the French sculptor Philippe Poitevin (1831-1907). A bronzed spelter statue of Don Cesar, raised on a pedestal (green felt underneath) that has a plaque saying 'Don Cesar' and 'Par Poitevin'. ('By Poitevin') although it is unsigned thus we have referred to as 'after' Poitevin) The date of production is most likely late 1800s to early 1900's. It is in excellent condition with both brass sword and sheath undamaged.
Don Cesar is a character from the play 'Ruy Blas' by Victor Hugo, also later the central character in the comic opera Don César de Bazan by Jules Massenet, first performed in Paris in 1872
