A pair of C20th bronze swans by Somchai Hattakitkosol with documentation.
This pair of wonderful mid to late 20th century large bronze swan sculptures by Thai artist Somchai Hattakitkosol (1934-2000) make an impressive statement. They are both signed and numbered and form two of a run of 1000 that were produced. (Numbers 199 and 71).
They are accompanied by two original certificates, in the original envelope - one of which is signed 'Somchai'. There is also the original leaflet that features the flying swans in one of the photographs. The envelope has some fading and foxing commensurate with wear.
We have seen some of Somchai's pieces described as 'gilded' bronze - these are not. There is no gold 'coating' as such. They are highly polished bronze. This is something that is both time consuming and requires a high degree of skill of execute well. They would have originally has a mirror finish - this has become tarnished over time. To polish a bronze of this size to a fine mirror finish today would be costly.
One of the birds has been left unpolished on the back (producing rather a nice shadow effect when the pair are viewed in the round).
The casting is excellent. We took them to a colleague with a long established UK bronze casting business who confirmed that they are good quality bronzes with a patina that would suggest they were several decades old. Each bird stands on a good quality dark wooden base with a rubber mat at the bottom to protect surfaces. The bases are in excellent condition.
They are fairly large sculptures, each measuring approx 26 inches including the base. The overall condition is very good. There are some signs of wear to the polished surface as may be expected and we have had to carry out some gentle cleaning as it appeared that someone had dripped some kind of cleaner onto the rear of one sculpture. We have cleaned them as minimally as possible.
The design is elegant and well considered. These would look as good in a commercial setting such as a restaurant or hotel as a home.
We are not prepared to sell them separately. They are a pair. The price includes UK P&P. We are happy to ship to Europe or the USA for an extra £100 (Please note the buyer is responsible for any taxes or other payments required when shipped abroad).
These are very special and very beautiful bronze sculptures with, unusually, the original documentation.
