The Merthyr rebellion happened in May 1831 when the coal miners and workers in Crawshay's ironworks protested against their conditions and the lowering of their wages. Dic Penderyn was hanged after an altercation with a soldier where the soldier was stabbed in the leg with a bayonet. The authorities took control, killing up to 24 protestors, others were arrested and sent to prison. Some were sent to penal colonies in Australian.
It is believed that this was the first time the red flag of working class revolution was flown.
